ARGENTIUM STERLING SILVER

~  ~  ~  ~  ~

When I first read about Argentium Sterling Silver, I was curious. It seemed to have some attractive qualities, but the confident claim that it was always nickel-free really got my attention.

Argentium is high quality sterling silver that is nickel-free and tarnish resistant. It has a beautiful luster that rivals the shine of platinum, and is even made out of entirely recycled silver. It is 93.5% silver, almost 7.5% copper, and a trace amount of germanium. The germanium acts as a hardener, and gives the silver its tarnish-resistant properities. It also answers huge question about what type of hardener is used in Argentium Sterling Silver -- because in standard sterling, that can sometimes be the nickel that is causing your rash.

Even though Argentium is tarnish resistant, it is not tarnish proof. So to boost your shine now and then, I am pleased that I can now offer you a small jewelry polishing cloth from my shop, that you can buy individually, or with your order.

Some general care recommendations for Argentium Sterling Silver jewelry are:

  • Store Argentium Silver in a soft pouch or self-sealing plastic bag
  • Don't use it with chemicals, pool water, or other abrasives
  • Don't use the types of silver cleaners on your Argentium, that are intended for standard Sterling Silver. They are different, and these cleaners will harm your Argentium.
  • Don't store your Argentium Slver in physical contact with standard Sterling Silver. I can't explain why, but something about this combination caused Argentium to tarnish badly.
  • Simple is actually best in this case -  just wash it off now and then with soap and water

So just relax and enjoy your jewelry!
